Homeschooling in Mississippi

How do I start homeschooling?

Homeschooling in Mississippi is a fairly simple process.

Every year, complete a certificate of enrollment for each child you’ll be homeschooling and submit it to your county attendance officer by September 15.

Officially withdraw your child from their current school (if enrolled).

Choose the homeschool curriculum you’d like to use with your child. This is up to you as the parent.

Homeschool Laws

According to Mississippi Homeschool Policy, “Pursuant to the Mississippi Code of 1972 Annotated Section 37-13-91, the Mississippi Legislature requires all compulsory-school-age children who have attained or will attain the age of six (6) years on or before September 1 of the calendar year and who have not attained the age of seventeen (17) years on or before September 1 of the calendar year; to enroll in and attend a public, private or home school.”

One way to meet the compulsory school age requirement is “when a compulsory-school-age child is being educated in a legitimate home instruction program.” The Mississippi Department of Education suggests, “Parents who wish to home school their children should contact their local School Attendance Officer (SAO) for information and requirements.”

Homeschool Requirements

Even though Mississippi does not highly regulate homeschooling, there are some Mississippi homeschool requirements you must satisfy when you homeschool:

Record Keeping

As mentioned previously, Mississippi law does not require any specific records to be kept or submitted by homeschool families.

Keeping a homeschool portfolio of your child’s accomplishments, is best practice for all homeschoolers.

Graduation requirements

Mississippi has no laws relating to graduating your homeschooler. Compulsory attendance is required for students until the age of 17, but there are no Mississippi guidelines on what your high schooler must achieve prior to graduation. Mississippi homeschooling families must set their own requirements for completion of schooling. However, if your student plans to attend college, it is a good idea to align their coursework to the requirements of the colleges they may apply to.

Modify™ helps homeschoolers to keep all necessary records and transcripts.
